We purchased this on Amazon.
My husband is very pleased with it.
He uses it around town and it will be real handy for him when we go on a trip.
He always wanted a GPS, we knew nothing about them but he is happy that we chose this one.

I RECENTLY ORDERED A GPS GARMIN 255W DEVICE ABOUT A MONTH AGO (WITH AMAZON). IT WAS ONE OF MY WORST SHOPPING EXPERIENCES EVER. I WAS NOT SHIPPED THE CORRECT PRODUCT "TWICE." THIS WAS JUST AWFUL AND RIDICULOUS. I'M SURE EVERYONE IS WONDERING HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED WITH SUCH A WELL-KNOWN CORPORATION???? I GOT IN TOUCH WITH A FEW SERVICE REPS AND THEY DID NOT HAVE AN EXPLANATION EITHER ON WHY I WAS SHIPPED WRONG PRODUCTS TWICE. I THOUGHT THEY WOULD PROVIDE SOME ASSURANCE FOR ME OR HAVE SOME KIND OF REASON TO WHY THIS HAD OCCURRED. I RECEIVED NONE AND IT SEEMS THEY HAD NO CORRECTIVE ACTION IN HELPING MAKE SURE I RECEIVED THE CORRECT PRODUCT I HAD ORIGINALLY ORDERED. I NEVER RECEIVED MY GPS UNIT AND REQUESTED FOR A REFUND. I DO NOT HAVE THE ANSWERS BUT I KNOW NEXT TIME I ORDER WITH AMAZON I WILL THINK MORE THAN TWICE. ANYONE WOULD HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTED. I GUARANTEE YOU.

I read thru the Amazon customer reviews on this item several times before deciding to order it. Had a very bad experience a few years ago with a TomTom that found its way into a dumpster. I figured I'd chance it once more as we really need it for out of state trips that are coming up very shortly.
I read thru the manual (what a joke !!) and then charged it with the usb cord I had. Once it was charged. I went on line and downloaded the latest map (2010) and updates. This took less than an hour with no problems. Today I tested it in the car to go to a local restaurant and at different times I would get off the route on purpose and the unit recalculated and got me back on route several times. It passed my test with flying colors (hope it wasnt a fluke)and am satisfied with all its features. You can also view the video on the Amazon page for this item. It will really help if your a newbie. Also the Garmin website has all the info you'll need for operating it.

Several friends had suggested the Garmin nuvi 255W. They said the GPS was user-friendly and lived up to its billing. I didn't want anything that looked like an airplane instrument panel, I just wanted something to get me where I wanted to go and get me back home. It certainly has done that. It is just right for me - minimal bells and whistles, easy to use and a voice I can understand. I also bought a hard case, accessory chargers and a FRICTION MOUNT - all 4 for less than $200.00. The FRICTION MOUNT is great and works just like the old bean-bag ash trays (you will have to be 'of a certain age' for this statement to mean anything). The hardest part for me was figuring out you have to have a part that comes with the origrinal GPS (the tray) to make it work. The FRICTION MOUNT is 2 pieces - the base and the ball hook. You have to have a tray that fits your GPS to make it work. Somehow this needs to be made easier or explained VERY CLEARLY on the packaging of the FRICTION MOUNT.

This unit, like all GPS units is a remarkable electronic device. It knows where I am, how fast I am going, and shows streets on the map while in route. The ability to
find POI,s, fuel, lodging, etc is wonderful. The ability to save routes is very useful. HOWEVER, it is not at smart as you with a good road map, or friendly advice,
when selecting a route you request. It does not know about urban traffic patterns and will send you thru a city at rush hour when there are alternate routes.
The ability to change the route is doable, but very complicated. You really need to know what 'Shortest' or "Fastest' means when selecting a route. The User Manual
is very basic, you should log on to the GPS Review Forum to get really good tips and answers. This certainly is a good first GPS unit to learn how and what a unit
can do.
I would recommend this unit but don't pay more than $120.
